Day 14 – Thursday: Ha Giang – Dong Van (B,L)

This morning we make our way up into the mountains which form the border between the most northern region of Vietnam and southern China. This is a frontier area and as it is rarely visited by tourists there is little in the way of infrastructure however the remoteness of the region and the refreshingly untouched lifestyle of the local people are the rewards. Once we reach the top of the first mountain pass we will stop to admire the incredible views on offer from ‘Heaven’s Gate.’ The lands in this region used to be under the control of the Hmong people until Ho Chi Minh unified them as part of the Viet Minh force who eventually ousted the French from Vietnam in 1954. We will pay a visit to the former residence of the last Hmong King, the Vuong Palace, a large two storey residence which was built by the French and learn more about the customs of the Hmong people. Late this afternoon we will arrive in the small town of Dong Van and check into hotel. The hotel is the best in town but may still be considered basic however the rooms are all clean and have en suite facilities. Tonight there are limited restaurants on offer however it will provide you with a chance to eat with the locals. This is often the best way of being made to feel welcome and to receive some of their hospitality. Just watch out for the rice wine! Stay one night at the Cao Nguyen Da Guest House (standard room)

Day 15 – Friday: Dong Van – Ha Giang (B,L)

This morning we visit the lively Sunday markets in Dong Van and Meo Vac, over yonder from Dong Van. The 22km drive from Dong Van to Meo Vac is the most spectacular section of the drive as the road climbs up the side of a massive canyon to the Ma Phi Len pass at 1500m, and the views down the Nho Que river below are dizzying. The markets are also incredible and are arguable two of the most remote and colourful markets in South East Asia. Here we see ethnic minority groups but the dominant are the aptly named Flower Hmong, whose women wear intricately designed clothing and carry bags with bright floral patterns. All these ethnic minority tribes wear their distinct costumes and come into town to trade on this one day of the week. You will be able to witness a wide array of goods being traded from fresh vegetables and livestock to locally produced handicrafts such as scarves, wooden carvings and incense. After lunch we start the drive back to Ha Giang town through the mountain side villages where you can witness the people farming and living as they have done for centuries past. Stay one night at the Huy Hoang Hotel (standard room)

Day 16 – Saturday: Ha Giang – Ba Be (B,L)

This morning we drive from Ha Giang to the Ba Be National Park. Upon arrival you will be dropped off at your accommodation before doing a short trek in the National Park. Stay one night at the Ba Be National Park Guest House (standard room)

Day 17 – Sunday: Ba Be – Cao Bang (B,L)

After breakfast do a boat cruise around Ba Be Lake, which has been ranked as one of the most beautiful freshwater lakes in the world. After reaching the end of the lake take a short walk to the Dau Dang Waterfall before meeting the jeep to begin the drive to Cao Bang. Stay two nights at the Thanh Loan Hotel (standard room)

Day 18 – Monday: Cao Bang (B,L)

This morning we will drive north to the beautiful Ban Gioc Waterfall. This picturesque, cascading waterfall is 53 metres high and has an impressive span of 300 metres. The drive itself is extremely interesting with unique landscape including limestone karst formations soaring from the rice paddies along the roadsides and also local colourful ethnic people on their way to market. After visiting the waterfall we will drive back to Cao Bang, stopping at the 2144 metre Nguom Ngao Cavern on the way back.

Day 19 – Tuesday: Cao Bang – Lang Son (B,L)

Depart Ba Be National Park for Lang Son, enjoying Vietnamese rural life along the way. In the afternoon visit Tam Thanh grotto and have some free time to explore the Lang Son Border Town. Stay one night at the Hoang Son Hai Hotel (standard room)

Day 20 – Wednesday: Lang Son – Halong (B,L,D)

“The best trip I`ve been on to Asia. I would do it again if I could. Lots of spectactular scenery, interesting food, really friendly people. I saw a side of Vietnam few others have the opportunity to experience.” – I. McTernan.

“Travelling to the remote regions of North Vietnam was a real eye opener. The karst mountain scenery is most unusual and very spectacular. The local people were also extremely friendly and it was special to see the hill tribes close-up and experience their culture. Anyone with a sense of adventure would absolutely love this trip.” – B. Burns

“I can heartily recommend the trip circumnavigating North Vietnam. Few outsiders have ventured into many of the areas and visitors are themselves a novelty. The geography is spectacular- national parks, remote villages and caves - and Dien Bien Phu is a must for history buffs. Well organised and adaptable when required. A great trip.” – J. Hajek

Stay overnight in Longhouse in Mai Chau.

Day 6 – Wednesday: Mai Chau – Son La (B,L)

Upon leaving Mai Chau we see many villages dotting the hillside and the undulating which makes for an interesting journey. Along the way we stop for a short trek near Xa Linh, visiting the Hmong and the Muong people. Travelling across the Moc Chau Plateau we pass many tea plantations en route to Son La, which is where we will spend the night. There we have the opportunity to visit the old Son La Prison, which the French used to imprison Vietnamese revolutionaries in the latter years of the colonial era. Crossing over the Pha Din Pass we travel to Dien Bien Phu, the site of the decisive battle in Vietnam’s struggle for independence from the French in 1954. Today the town houses a recently renovated museum, which details the events that took place. On display are relics from the battle including old French tanks and artillery pieces. Of special interest is the reconstruction of the bunker where the French commander, Colonel de Castries, surrendered to Viet Minh forces. Stay overnight at the Dien Bien Phu Hotel (standard room)

A long days drive through scenic, winding roads as our journey continue to Lai Chau, which encompasses and area formerly known as Tam Duong. This mountainous region is populated by many hill tribe villaged and interesting markets where the local villages come to trade their goods. We stay overnight in a very simple hotel, but it must be noted that all accommodation options here are very basic as we are staying in areas that see very few visitors. Stay overnight at the Phuong Thanh Hotel (standard room)

Day 9 – Saturday: Lai Chau – Sapa (B,L)

This morning we drive from Lai Chau to Sapa. Sapa was founded in the early years of the last century as a hilltop retreat for the French administrators when the heat of the plains became unbearable. At an altitude of over 1000 metres, there are warm days and cool evenings. The local minority groups such as Hmong and Dao come to Sapa to trade. The imposing Fan Si Pan range of hills encourages an alpine feel to this colonial-influenced town. Stay three nights at the Chau Long Hotel (run-of-house room, New Wing)

Day 10 – Sunday: Sapa (B,L)

Our trek into this mountainous region beings as we depart Sapa and pass through many different hill tribe villages. On our journey we will have the opportunity to meet some of the local people. The Black Hmong, Tay, Red Dzao and Sa Pho are some of the minority groups who have settled in this remote region. We trek through this forested region to a Red Dzao village called Giang Ta Chay where we have lunch and then return to Sapa in the late afternoon.

Day 11 – Monday: Sapa (B,L)

Today we continue our exploration of the local minority villages around the Sapa region. On our journey to Ta Van and Ban Ho villages we meet many of the local people including Black Hmong, Tay, Red Dzao and Sa Pho who originally settled in this region centuries ago. Weather permitting you may be able to take a refreshing swim in the small waterfall and lago0n near Ban Ho Village before returning to Sapa this afternoon. In Sapa you will have a chance to explore this quaint town including some great cafes, souvenir shops and the central market.

Day 12 – Tuesday: Sapa – Bac Ha (B,L)

Drive 130km to Bac Ha to visit the colourful village of the Flower Hmong, Phu La and Dao Tuyen people. Drive on to Trung Do Village of the Tay. Walk through the village observing the lifestyle of the northern hill tribe people and the beautiful landscape then take a two hour river boat trip before returning to Bac Ha. Stay three nights at the Sao Mai Hotel (deluxe room)

Day 13 – Wednesday: Bac Ha – Ha Giang (B,L)

An early start departing Bac Ha as we head for the hills in the East. As we make out way into Ha Giang province you will notice that the landscape is scenic with rice paddies and small villages throughout. We will stop or lunch in Viet Quang, afterwards taking a short stroll around a small Tay village before continuing on to Ha Giang for the evening. Tonight your tour leader will have to collect your passports to hand over to local tourism authorities in order to obtain the permits required to visit this region. Stay one night at the Huy Hoang Hotel (standard room)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What is the weight limit for luggage/clothing/equipment that each traveler can take on the trek?
A: The weight limit for the trek is 15kg/ 35 lbs per person, as this is the maximum weight that mules and porters can carry. It is also important to note that ìhardî luggage poses a problem. Soft, ìduffle bagî type luggage is recommended.

Q: What should guests do with their remaining bags and clothing?
A: Remaning luggage can be stored in Cusco at your pre-trek hotel.

Q: How is luggage transported from lodge to lodge? Is it with us at all times?
A: Guests should carry a day-pack with them with everything needed for the day. Mules and porters carrying the luggage will not walk with the group. Your luggage will meet you upon arrival at each lodge.

Q: What is the weather like on the Salkantay trek during the year?
Guides carry full first aid kit and portable oxygen with them at all times.
